Outdoors & gardening

Behind Queen’s Wood Cafe is a community garden with flowers, fruit and vegetables growing side by side and bees from the hives gathering pollen.

The garden was started in 1998 when the derelict lodge building (now the cafe) was reclaimed and restored. It was the original garden for the lodge keeper and so the soil had been well nurtured in the past, but had become overgrown with trees and shrubs. Now it is a thriving example of what can be achieved in a small space with apple and quince trees, Rhubarb and fruit bushes interspersed with vegetable plots. Summer 2015 we installed an outdoor aquaponics system, raising fish and veggies.

The garden is maintained by volunteers on Mondays and Thursdays, from 9.30am to 1pm. Suggested activities include planting, digging, harvesting, basic DIY, pruning and clearing, sowing seeds, greenhouse work and maintaining healthy compost piles.

We have plants for sale during cafe opening times. The garden has also held workshops on food growing and compost making for schools and other groups in the local area.

Note: Please do not attend any volunteering opportunity listed on this website until you have taken steps to meet with us and become registered with Hands On London. Charities and community groups featured on our events calendar need to know that volunteers are registered and that their identity has been independently verified – they have requested confirmation of this via Hands On London.  If you attend without being registered or approved, it is likely you will be turned away and have a wasted journey.
