Coronavirus Response: We need you!

The Coronavirus situation is developing rapidly every day which is creating unique challenges for all of us.

HandsOn London are working with our community partners to plan and respond as quickly and effectively as possible to meet the most urgent needs. The team and I have conference meetings daily to assess the situation and agree the best approaches as the situation develops.

In response to the UK lockdown, we have moved the charity into an urgent response mode. This has resulted in several new approaches being adopted to meet the needs of the charities we support.

We believe in facilitating vital service provisions for Community Partners with volunteers that are ready and able to meet that need safely. In collaboration with our partners we are continuing to identify ways this can be done in accordance with government guidance.

That said, the health and safety of our volunteers, Team Leaders and the people we serve remain our top priority.

Our Phase 1 response to the Coronavirus pandemic is as follows:

  • Instructing team leaders and staff to work remotely and creating opportunities to volunteer virtually where possible.
  • We have created health and safety guidelines for volunteers, Team Leaders, and Community Partners in line with government advice. We provide regular communications to volunteers and Team Leaders about the importance of staying informed and practicing preventive measures. We ensure through our networks that best practice and safe engagement can be practiced. We are fortunately independent members of the Global Points of Light organisation so can share experience and good practice from 35 countries world wide.
  •  We have created and therefore maintain and revise a list of community volunteering needs that is easily accessible and geared for people to give their time locally and safely if they are able to (following Government guidelines) found here: Covid-19 HOW YOU CAN HELP
  • We are helping administer volunteers for several small community groups.
  • We are working with small groups to help maintain ‘virtual coffee mornings’ and other initiatives to help reduce isolation
  • We are matching gifts in kind and donations directly to our charity partners that need them the most.
  • We continue to identify additional programming needs with Community Partners, specifically focused on issues such as reducing isolation for vulnerable individuals and aiding food banks and charities supporting homeless individuals.

Our regular projects have closed which has created new challenges for the support of vulnerable people they normally aid. Almost all of the community groups have had to change the way they work, often at little or no notice and we are supporting them through this. These are difficult and uncertain times, but I want to take this opportunity to thank you all so much – it is inspiring to see the passion, flexibility and commitment from our Friends during this time of crisis.

We will continue to do all we can to support our community partners, individuals and corporate volunteers through these difficult times.
