Abbey Community Centre
Please note: If you have not volunteered at the Community Cafe before, we kindly ask that you book in for the first Saturday of the month. This is the monthly session where new volunteers are invited for a short induction before volunteering at the cafe.
The Abbey’s Community Cafe is a weekly Saturday pop up cafe at Abbey Community Centre. We are a café with a difference; putting community and positive change at the heart of our purpose (and great food and drink!). You can find us serving delicious, home-cooked, vegetarian food every Saturday between 11am-2pm.
Do you ever wonder what happens to those wonky carrots the supermarket doesn’t want? Those packages that get a little bit damaged? Well more often than not they are headed to a land fill despite being absolutely perfect still. By working with the wonderful Felix Project () and other similar organisations who coordinate with supermarkets, bakeries and restaurants to supply places like us with surplus food, Abbey’s rescues this surplus food and puts it to better use. We stop fresh food, end-of-line products and misshapen veggies going to land fill and instead create healthy, home cooked meals here in the community.
We operate a rota system for our volunteers that fills up quickly for the kitchen assistant and front of house roles, so we cannot guarantee a shift for those roles on a particular day. You will be asked to provide a phone number, to discuss the available shifts and to have a small induction. We will also need you to watch a short kitchen safety video online (about 15 minutes) before you come along.
We always need help washing up however – the more the merrier! So if you are willing to come along and roll your sleeves up and get stuck in like this you are welcome anytime 11am-3pm! Just let us know to expect you. We provide a free delicious lunch at 2pm in return and a great vibe in the kitchen with your fellow volunteers. There are often other odd-jobs you can help with – admin, gardening, talking with our lovely centre users, arts and crafts, tech help for older people, and other events we might have going on that day.
